Bob Van Buren, Former Domco Tarkett CEO, Dies

Farnham, Quebec, May 31--Robert W. Van Buren, former vice chairman and chief executive officer of Domco Tarkett, now Tarkett Inc., died Friday, May 27, 2005, at his home in Marlboro, New York. He was 75. Van Buren began his flooring career in the late 1940s with Mastic Tile and through a series of promotions, became plant supervisor in 1956. After helping build manufacturing facilities in Germany and Japan, Van Buren became plant manager and a few years later advanced to vice president of manufacturing of the flooring division for GAF. He later served as president of Amtico for seven years and later led Azrock Industries as general manager and chief operating officer. From 1989 to December 2000, Van Buren achieved many successes at Domco Tarkett as vice chairman and chief executive officer. Called a manufacturing "genius" by a friend, Van Buren truly understood the business. He continued to be instrumental in developing new products and newer, more efficient manufacturing processes. Throughout his career he played an instrumental role in the development of sheet vinyl manufacturing technology, such as thru-chip construction and the introduction of the first urethane coated tile. His understanding of the business spanned across all levels, as he was frequently known to visit his factories, roll up his sleeves and get involved with the flooring business from start to finish. Van Buren, a top quality man and a true leader, leaves a strong legacy. He truly built an extraordinary reputation in the flooring industry. Van Buren is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Van Buren, his four children, and many grandchildren.
