Black Friday & Cyber Monday Sales Both Up Double Digits YOY
San Jose, CA, December 8, 2016—Adobe released its 2016 online shopping data for Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
More than $5 billion ($5.27 billion) was spent online by the end of Black Friday, a 17.7% increase year-over-year (YOY).
Black Friday set a new record by surpassing the three-billion-dollar mark for the first time at $3.34 billion (21.6% growth YOY), while Thanksgiving accounted for the remaining $1.93 billion. Black Friday became the first day in retail history to drive over one billion dollars in mobile revenue at $1.2 billion, a 33% growth YOY.
Mobile is driving the majority of visits to retail websites on Black Friday at 55% (45% coming from smartphones, 10% from tablets), while accounting for 36% of sales (25% smartphones, 11% tablets). Large retailers have seen twice the growth in online sales compared to small retailers since the beginning of the season. Retailers that have invested in mobile, email and social have seen 30% more sales on average and 25% higher average order values.
Cyber Monday is on track to hit a new record with $3.39 billion spent online, a 10.2% increase YOY. This will mark the largest online sales day in history, surpassing Black Friday ($3.34 billion) by a narrow margin. Cyber Monday is expected to generate slightly less mobile revenue than Black Friday at $1.19 billion, a 48% YOY increase. The holiday shopping season so far (November 1-28) is expected to drive a total of $39.9 billion in online revenue, a 7.4% increase YOY, with 27 out of 28 days this holiday season generating over $1 billion.
