BioCel Backing a Sustainable Choice

Dalton, GA, March 27, 2006--BioCel, the award-winning, environmentally-sensitive polyurethane backing for carpets and artificial turf, continues to win accolades from the sustainable design community and market acceptance from manufacturers. Developed by Dalton, Georgia-based Universal Textile Technologies, BioCel replaces a portion of the petroleum-based polymers in polyurethane with recycled and sustainable components, resulting in a backing that is third-party certified to be approximately 70% green by weight based on the backing system selected. BioCel contains Celceram, a highly-refined, recovered form of the mineral lignite, combined with polymers created from American grown soybeans, a renewable resource. Since its introduction, BioCel has become the performance and environmental backing of choice for commercial and selected hospitality carpet and artificial turf manufacturers. When introduced at the 2004 NeoCon World’s Trade Fair, BioCel won the Grand Prize for Environmental Initiatives presented by Buildings Magazine. BioCel contributes to LEED point credit for rapidly renewable materials and can be specified for GSA use under SIN 31601. BioCel is standard on polyurethane cushion and non-cushioned backing manufactured by UTT. According to Universal Textile Technologies’ president Tom Peeples, “Universal is committed to the principles of sustainable development. With BioCel, we have a green product with improved performance, and no increase in cost. We’re extremely proud of the advances BioCel brings to sustainable technology.” Universal Textile Technologies supplies the carpet industry with multiple backing systems manufactured for use in high-traffic commercial applications, including the corporate, healthcare, and education markets.
