Bed Bath & Beyond 2Q Earnings Up 23%

Union, NJ, September 23--Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.'s earnings rose 23 percent in the latest quarter as overall sales grew 15 percent and sales per store increased. For the fiscal second quarter ended Aug. 28, the Union-based retailer Wednesday said it earned $120 million, or 39 cents a share, on revenue of $1.27 billion. In the same period last year, it earned $97.2 million, or 32 cents a share, on revenue of $1.11 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of 39 cents a share on sales of $1.29 billion, according to Thomson First Call. Sales at stores open more than a year, or same-store sales, grew by 4.8 percent in the second quarter, compared with 5.9 percent growth recorded a year ago.
