Sydney, Australia, Nov. 27--The Federal Government has announced a $747 million assistance package for the textiles, clothing and footwear industry (TCF), according to the Daily Telegraph. Tariffs on imported clothing and textiles would also be frozen for a further five years, the government said today. Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said tariffs on clothing would be frozen at 17.5 percent until 2010, when they would drop to ten percent, and then five percent in 2015. Tariffs on sheeting, carpet and footwear would stay at ten percent and tariffs on sleeping bags and table linen would stay at 7.5 percent between 2005 and 2010 and then drop to five percent. The announcement follows a Productivity Commission recommendation.
