AstroTurf Incorporates AlphaSan Antimicrobial Into

Dalton, GA, November 22, 2005--A highly effective antimicrobial agent found in fabrics, bathroom fixtures and the linings inside ice machines has found a new application in synthetic turf. AstroTurf, long associated with innovation in synthetic turf sports surfaces, has added the protection of AlphaSan to their entire line of indoor and outdoor turf products. Developed by Milliken Chemical, AlphaSan is a ceramic ion-exchange resin with silver. Added during the manufacturing process, AlphaSan becomes a permanent component of the fiber itself. Bacteria, fungi, and algae find their way into synthetic turf through contact with human skin, food, and moisture, among other things. These microorganisms reproduce and often result in odor, discoloration, and fiber degradation. Testing shows AlphaSan consistently eliminates approximately 99% of these contaminants from synthetic turf. "AstroTurf is the first and only manufacturer to offer antimicrobial turf products," says AstroTurf president Bryan Peeples. "With AlphaSan, we're seeking to protect not only the products we produce, but the people who use them and the environment as well."
