ASCER Opens IVth Tile of Spain Award Competition

Castellon, Spain, October 7, 2005 -- The Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER) has announced that the competition for the IVth Tile of Spain Awards is now open. With a total value of 45,000 euros the prizes aim to reward those architectural and interior design projects that make the best use of ceramic tiles made in Spain. This year the ASCER prizes once again include a category for the best Degree Projects. The total prize fund for the Tile of Spain awards is a substantial 45,000 euros including 18,000 for the architecture category, 18,000 for the interior design category and 9,000 euros for the Degree Projects category A jury made up of renowned architects and interior designers and representatives of trade associations and the trade press means that the selection process is conducted both rigorously and professionally. Architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra is president of the jury for the IVth Tile of Spain Awards of Architecture and Interior Design. Members of the jury include architect Benedetta Tagliabue; architect and editor of Tectónica magazine Carlos Quintáns; Chris Sullivan, architect and editor of American magazine Architecture; designer Daniel Nebot; architect Dolores Alonso; Frances Aldrich de Llopis, editor of Casa Décor magazine; architects Jaime Prior, Javier Fresneda, Ramón Monfort and Teresa Sapey; Vicente Sarrablo, architect and Head of the Department of Ceramic Studies and architect Víctor Echarri. This year the prizes are being sponsored by Vodafone Spain and the Port Authority of Valencia. Previous winners of Tile of Spain Awards in the architecture and interior design categories include Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, Ángela García de Paredes and Ignacio García Pedrosa, Jaume Bach, Rosa Rull, Manuel Bailo, Peter Leeb and Cristina Condak, Francesc Rifé, Leopoldo Gil and Daniel Fraile. In the Architecture category the Tile of Spain Awards reward work undertaken by professional practitioners of the discipline. Entries may relate to new builds, renovation or refurbishment projects, urban redevelopment projects or exterior landscaping. The interior design category on the other hand singles out the best decoration of interior spaces in either new, refurbished or renovated buildings as well as settings created for short-term events. Projects being entered for both these categories must have been completed during the period January 2004-October 2005. It is a pre-requisite that the projects must have made substantial use of ceramic floor and/or wall tiles made in Spain in the formal part of the building. The Degree Projects category is open to all projects of this nature that have been submitted during 2004 and 2005 (prior to the closing date for entries) at Spanish Advanced Schools of Architecture. Projects entered in this category must likewise make significant use of ceramic floor and/or wall tiles in the formal part of the building.
