Armstrong Sent 2 Versions of Stolen Laptop Letter

Lancaster, PA, July 28, 2006--Armstrong World Industries last week sent at least two versions of a letter to 12,000 current and former employees, alerting them that a copy of their personal information was stolen, according to the Lancaster New Era. As was reported Tuesday, the information was on a laptop taken from the locked car of a payroll auditor for one of Armstrong's auditing firms, Deloitte & Touche. The letter itemizes the information on the laptop. But the two versions differ on whether the stolen data includes the primary bank account number for employees who use payroll direct deposit. One version, which the New Era obtained for its Tuesday story, makes no mention of it. But a second version, obtained later by the New Era, does include it, adding that the laptop's data does not specify the employee's bank.
