207,000 Jobs Added in July

Washington, DC, August 5--Employers added 207,000 in July, according to the Labor Department. The department said the rise was the biggest increase in three months and the also said employers created 42,000 more nonfarm jobs in May and June than previously estimated. That increases hike the monthly average for the year to a robust 191,000. Economist were execting 180,000 jobs to be created during he month The unemployment rate in July remained at 5% as more workers entered the labor force in search of jobs. The civilian labor force increased by 450,000 in July, the Labor Department said. Of those, 438,000 found jobs. Average hourly earnings rose six cents, or 0.4%, to $16.13, for the biggest increase in a year. Estimates of non-farm job growth for May and June were revised higher, with employers adding 126,000 in May and 166,000 in June. Previous estimates indicated a 104,000 increase in May and a 146,000 increase in June. The manufacturing reducing payrolls by 4,000. But most other industries added jobs. The service-providing industry added 203,000, the retail-trade industry added 50,000 jobs. The professional-and-business-services industry, which includes temporary-help jobs, added 33,000 jobs and 26,000 jobs were created in the government sector duringhte month. The average work week was unchanged at 33.7 hours for a third month in a row.
