Manufactured Goods Orders Rose 3% in June, Following 2 Declines

Washington, DC, August 3, 2017-New orders for manufactured goods in June, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $14.0 billion or 3.0% to $481.1 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau has reported.

This followed a 0.3% May decrease. Shipments, down following two consecutive monthly increases, decreased $0.9 billion or 0.2% to $471.5 billion. This followed a 0.3% May increase. Unfilled orders, up three of the last four months, increased $14.2 billion or 1.3% to $1,135.7 billion. This followed a 0.1% May decrease. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 6.83, up from 6.74 in May. Inventories, up seven of the last eight months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.2% to $649.1 billion. This followed a 0.2% May decrease. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.38, up from 1.37 in May.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $14.8 billion or 6.4% to $245.8 billion, down from the previously published 6.5% increase. This followed a virtually unchanged May decrease. Transportation equipment, also up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase, $14.7 billion or 19.0% to $91.7 billion. New orders for manufactured nondurable goods decreased $0.8 billion or 0.3% to $235.3 billion.
