Skowhegan, ME, January 20--Plans are under way in Skowhegan for floor-manufacturing business in Northgate Industrial Park.
The Augusta, Maine, Morning Sentinel reported that Maine Traditions Hardwood Flooring, a division of Kennebec Lumber Co. in Solon, will be manufacturing prefinished hardwood flooring at the former Custom Shoes of Maine location at the south end of the industrial park on North Avenue.
Denis Carrier of Skowhegan, owner of Kennebec Lumber Co., has leased the former shoe manufacturing building from the new owners of that building, William and Julie Redmond. Custom Shoes closed more than year ago.
The Redmonds initially had planned to expand their truck sales business there, but decided to lease the entire 12,000-square-foot building to Carrier.
Carrier said the plan is to manufacture flooring, use part of the building as a warehouse and open a small retail store where people can buy mill-direct hardwood flooring: "They'll be getting great quality at a good price."
Carrier said Monday he is not sure yet when the business will open or how many people he will employ.
