National Gypsum Adds Backerboard Plant in Indiana

Charlotte, NC, September 10--National Gypsum has announced plans to increase production of cement backerboard by adding a fourth plant to that business line. The plant will be located in Clinton, Indiana. Cement backerboard is used as underlayment for tile floors, walls and countertops. It is also used as exterior sheathing and in exterior stucco systems. In 1998, National Gypsum acquired Unifix, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of cement backerboard with operations in Bromont, Quebec. After the purchase, National Gypsum completed a plant near Jacksonville, Florida, and built a third cement board plant near Dallas, Texas. "Since the Unifix acquisition, we have seen a three-fold increase in our PermaBase cement board sales," said Thomas C. Nelson, president and chief executive officer of National Gypsum. "Our three plants have reached capacity, leading us to locate a fourth plant in Indiana. The Clinton plant will serve our growing markets in the Midwest."
