Mohawk Closing Arkansas Columbia Hardwood Plant
Melbourne, AR, March 3, 2009--Mohawk has decided to shutter its hardwood flooring plant here in May.
According to Randy Smith, vice president of operations, “The severe decline in the overall economy and the housing market has significantly reduced the demand for hardwood flooring by over 40% industry wide.”
The plant was one of four that came with the Columbia purchase, and it specializes in prefinished, solid flooring. A company spokesperson said that current demand can be handled by a Holden, W. Va. plant and that the Melbourne plant will eventually be reopened once demand picks up.
