Invista Donates Climate Change Credits

Atlanta, GA, November 11-- Invista will retire 10,704,000 pounds of climate change credits to offset emissions caused by energy use during the 2004 U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Portland, Ore., Nov. 10-12, 2004. The credits represent a reduction from the Invista Sabine River Plant in Orange, Texas, equivalent to 5,352 tons of carbon dioxide. Companies that take action to reduce pollutant emissions are awarded climate change credits. Credits are typically sold, traded, or banked for future use. Invista has again chosen to donate these credits to Leonardo Academy, a non-profit organization that seeks to foster opportunities for the private sector to become engines for driving increased energy efficiency and environmental improvement. Through the organization’s Cleaner and Greenersm program, the credits will be retired, offsetting the amount of CO2 pollution that is discharged to the atmosphere from travel, hotels, utilities, and all potential CO2 emissions connected to the conference. "Invista continues to analyze the life-cycle impact of Antron carpet fiber and find the most efficient way to reduce the impact," said Alan Wolk, president, Invista Interiors. "Climate change emissions, hazardous wastes, energy consumption and water use have all been reduced as a result of our dedication to decreasing our environmental footprint." Wolk also points out that Antron fiber is the first carpet face fiber to achieve Environmentally Preferable Product certification and is the first fiber to be re-certified under the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) program. SCS is a scientific organization recognized internationally for its third party evaluation and certification programs. In addition to being the third year Invista has offset the USGBC Greenbuild Conference, Invista has also donated climate change emission credits to offset emissions caused by the 2004 EnvironDesign8 conference and all 2004 Antron sponsored customer seminars. This amounts to a total donation of nearly 18 million pounds of climate change credits this year.
