Hardwood Flooring Shipments Retain Momentum

Memphis, TN, June 22--Hardwood flooring shipments for May 2005 were reported at 59,116,000 board feet, an 11% increase over the previous month’s shipments and a significant improvement over the shipments figure for the same month in 2004. The report on monthly shipments of hardwood flooring products for the month of May 2005 was released by NOFMA: The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association. The information represents data from hardwood flooring manufacturers in the U.S. Figures for May 2004 showed shipments of 53,224,000 board feet. This is the second consecutive month when shipments have exceeded the same month in 2004, when the flooring industry experienced 40-year highs in shipment figures overall. The improved figures likely represent a continuation of the reaction to pent up demand that resulted in an uptick in shipment figures during April. Year-to-date shipments for the first five months of 2005 are 271,912,000 board feet, slightly more than 1% less than the same period in 2004. Shipments through five months of 2004 were 275,573,000 board feet. Hardwood flooring shipments for the past 12 months have totaled 669,144,000 board feet, nearly 10 million feet higher than the same 12-month period one year ago.
