Founder of Shaheen Carpet Mills Dies in Dalton

Dalton, GA, February 11, 2008--Said Shaheen, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1933 and 13 years later purchased the Hansen Chenille mill, died Saturday, Feb. 9 at the age of 93.

Shaheen purchased Hansen Chenille along with his brothers, and eventually the company became Katherine Rug Mills. It was a pioneer in the tufted carpet industry with many innovations. The brothers sold the business in 1960 and the company helped launch the careers of Shaheen Shaheen, Said’s nephew, and founder of World Carpet Mills, as well as Bud Seretean and Guy Henley, two of the founders of Coronet Industries.

In 1964 he founded Shaheen Carpet Mills, which is still in business today.

Shaheen was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years, and the Civitan Club for more than 50 years.

Services are being held Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church.
