Sutherland Lumber Closes Last Omaha Store

Kansas City, MO, July 30--Sutherlands Lumber and Home Improvement its last store it operated in the Omaha area by the Kansas City based home improvement retailer, according to the Omaha World-Herald. Sutherlands has sold building products in Omaha for more than 70 years, but the arrival of larger home improvement retailers, especially Home Depot, Menard's and Lowe's, has heightened competition for customers. Sutherlands had closed aonther Omaha store in August 2000 after a Home Depot store opened nearby. Two other Sutherlands locations closed before that. Sutherlands operates about 65 other stores in 15 states, from Ohio to New Mexico, down from a peak of about 80 stores. The company began with lumber yards first in Durant, Okla., and later in Des Moines. The Omaha store is one of the company's oldest.
