Shaw Flips the Switch on Half-Acre Solar Installation in Adairsville

Adairsville, GA, April 17, 2024-In line with its goal of becoming a net zero enterprise by 2030, Shaw is now offsetting a portion of its T1 carpet tile plant’s energy use through a half-acre solar installation located onsite. The move was marked with a “flipping of the switch” ceremony yesterday.

The 300kW installation also ties in with several other Shaw initiatives.

In 2021, the flooring manufacturer purchased a controlling interest in Watershed Geo, which produces the PowerCap solar system. Able to be installed on steep slopes, it offers a way to turn otherwise undevelopable land into an energy-producing asset, and the sloped installation at Shaw provides an accessible way to showcase the possibilities to potential customers.

The system incorporates Shaw’s ClosureTurf, specialized for such applications, and Chuck McClurg, vice president of Shaw Turf, sees opportunity for growth in that and Shaw’s other three turf categories (landscape, sports and golf). Shaw president and CEO Tim Baucom said turf is the company’s fastest-growing category, though it still represents less than 10% of Shaw’s more than $6 billion in annual revenues.

At the end of last year, Shaw aligned its go-to-market strategies under three business units: residential, commercial and turf, and McClurg expects the honed focus to propel the category.
