Langhorne Carpet Giving Away Six Tons of Wool

Penndel, PA, Feb. 25, 2014 -- Last summer’s electrical fire near the shipping dock of Langhorne Carpet Company's century-old, one-story Pennsylvania mill is resulting in a giveaway of six tons of wool to non-profit organizations.

The quickly-contained fire did not damage any of the company's looms, and the wool wasn't involved in the fire.

Nevertheless, the insurance adjuster said that part of the re-start plan involved restocking the wool inventory.

"We never considered a landfill to be a suitable distribution site for this precious natural resource,” said company president Bill Morrow.

The company quickly turned its attention to finding good homes for the yarn.

“The response from local hand weavers and artisans to colleges and universities, textile museums and social service-vocational training organizations has been fabulous,” Morrow said.

“When we started our ‘Carpets of Caring’ program to benefit non-profit organizations like Habitat for Humanity, we never thought that would include what might be the largest wool giveaway ever.”

To date the mill has given away more than 2,000 pounds. Those interested should contact Langhorne.

One unusual application of Langhorne’s charitable wool distribution is the shipment to the Textile Center of Minneapolis, which is making a wool sculpture.
