Couple Sues Wood Manufacturer Over Rare Infestation

Newfoundland, Canada, Jan. 15, 2015 -- Homeowners here are seeking compensation in small claims court following a rare powderpost beetle infestation in their hardwood flooring, according to CBC News.

However the retailer that sold it to them for a playroom in 2010 and the Quebec manufacturer say the homeowners are to blame.

Exterminators have recommended that the entire house be treated, which could cost nearly $25,000.

But both the manufacturer and retailer say they've never before heard of such an infestation, and are not responsible.

Experts on the bugs say true powderpost beetles feed on starch contained in hardwoods like oak and maple by entering large pores in the end grain, where females lay their eggs.

They also say infestations can also begin where wood is stored. The couple believes the bugs couldn't have entered the wood after it was installed, so they initiated their legal action.

The bugs aren't native to the area, and the manufacturer said they couldn't have survived the drying process.
