Orders for Durable Goods Rose 1.9% in June

Washington, DC, July 27, 2022-New orders for manufactured durable goods in June increased $5.0 billion or 1.9% to $272.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This increase, up eight of the last nine months, followed a 0.8% May increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.3%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.4%. Transportation equipment, up three consecutive months, led the increase, $4.5 billion or 5.1% to $92.7 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, up thirteen of the last fourteen months, increased $0.7 billion or 0.3% to $269.6 billion. This followed a 1.5% May increase. Computers and electronic products, up seven of the last eight months, led the increase, $0.4 billion or 1.4% to $29.0 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up twenty-two consecutive months, increased $7.9 billion or 0.7% to $1,117.6 billion. This followed a 0.3% May increase. Transportation equipment, up sixteen of the last seventeen months, led the increase, $7.7 billion or 1.2% to $647.7 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in June, up seventeen consecutive months, increased $1.8 billion or 0.4% to $484.8 billion. This followed a 0.6% May increase. Machinery, up twenty consecutive months, led the increase, $0.7 billion or 0.9% to $83.1 billion.

Nondefense new orders for capital goods in June increased $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent to $84.2 billion. Shipments decreased $0.2 billion or 0.3 percent to $79.7 billion. Unfilled orders increased $4.5 billion or 0.7% to $628.6 billion. Inventories increased $0.9 billion or 0.4% to $211.9 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in June decreased $0.4 billion or 2.7 percent to $13.2 billion. Shipments decreased $0.2 billion or 1.6% to $13.7 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.5 billion or 0.3% to $185.0 billion. Inventories increased $0.3 billion or 1.3% to $22.6 billion.
