Jobless Claims Lowest in Over 14 Years

Washington, DC, Oct. 16, 2014 -- Initial claims for unemployment benefits last week were the lowest in more than 14 years, according to the Labor Department.

Initial claims plunged to 264,000 from 287,000 a week ago.

"This is the lowest level for initial claims since April 15, 2000, when it was 259,000," the Department of Labor said.

Economists were looking for claims to total 290,000.
