Rental Housing Sparse for Lowest-Income Americans, Says Urban Institute

Washington, DC, June 22, 2015—Not a single county in the U.S. has enough affordable housing for extremely low-income renters, according to a June report called The Housing Affordability Gap for Extremely Low Income Renters in 2013 by the Urban Institute.

The report says that since 2000, rents have risen while the number of renters who need low-priced housing has increased, making it tougher for very poor households to find affordable housing.

Nationwide, only 28 adequate and affordable units are available for every 100 renter households with incomes at or below 30% of the area median income.
