Green Seal Appoints Public Health Specialist to Board of Directors

Washington, D.C., July 23, 2015Green Seal, an independent nonprofit certifier of sustainable products and services, has appointed Dr. Janet A. Phoenix, MD, MPH to its board of directors.

Dr. Phoenix is a physician trained in public health who has managed research, risk communication, and health prevention and promotion programs for many organizations.

She is assistant research professor at the Milken Institute School of Public Health.

In the Department of Health Policy & Management at George Washington University. Dr. Phoenix is also the executive director of the Coalition for Environmentally Safe Communities, a national nonprofit organization providing technical assistance to communities at risk for environmental disease.

Dr. Phoenix has managed two community-based participatory research programs with faith-based organizations (one for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the other for the Environmental Protection Agency) and has directed health education activities at the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning (now the Alliance for Healthy Homes).

She has also been a member of two federal advisory committees (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Childhood Lead Advisory Committee and EPA’s Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee).

Among her international activities, she has provided assistance to the Egyptian government, the Polish government and the Silesian Medical Academy, and EPA’s Office of International Activities.

She organized an international lead conference (Healthy Children, Healthy Environments), which brought together technical experts and community-based representatives from around the world. She has written numerous articles relating to environmental health and lead poisoning. She was the recipient of a 2008 Health Policy Fellowship from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which she spent working on healthcare reform efforts in the U.S. Senate.

As an established national media spokesperson on lead poisoning prevention, Dr. Phoenix has designed several media campaigns on the topic, including a Spanish language campaign and an award winning campaign using the Muppets Elmo and Oscar for Children’s Television Workshop.
