Godfrey Hirst Signs Deal with NZ Merino Farmers for Crossbred Wool

Adairsville, GA, July 6, 2015—New Zealand Merino farmers have entered a $3 million deal with carpet manufacturer Godfrey Hirst to supply Merino crossbred wool, according to stuff.co.nz.

Mike Hargadon of New Zealand Merino explains that the carpet deal is significant because this type of sheep had once been written off as not commercially viable.

The companies began production trials for a new carpet range a year ago, marketed by Godfrey Hirst's Feltex Carpets brand under "The Merino Collection" banner. Additional wool has been contracted by Godfrey Hirst for the coming shearing season to start production runs of the new range.

NZM said the range combined the best of both worlds through the soft qualities of merino wool with the durability of strong wool.

Says Hargadon, "There's always been a distinction between apparel-worthy wool, such as merino, and the stronger wool used primarily in carpet-making. We've worked hard to develop a better understanding of how innovation can open up new commercial opportunities beyond what's considered the 'traditional' use of specific types of wool."
