Consumer Price Index February Increase Is First Since October

Washington, DC, March 25, 2015—Consumer prices rose 0.2% in February and were flat compared to the prior year, according to the Labor Department. This is the first rise in four months.

On a "core" basis, prices were in line with expectations, rising 0.2% over last month and 1.7% over the prior year.

The increase in the all items index was broad-based, with increases in shelter, energy and food indexes all contributing.

The energy index rose 1% after a long series of declines.

The food index also rose in February, though major grocery store food group indexes were mixed.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2% in February, the same increase as in January.

In addition to shelter, the indexes for used cars and trucks, apparel, new vehicles, tobacco and airline fares were among those that increased.
