Unemployment at Six-Year Low in September

Washington, DC, Oct. 3, 2014 -- The unemployment rate fell to 5.9% in September as the economy created 248,000 jobs, according to the Labor Department.

It was the lowest unemployment rate in six years. The rate in August was 6.1%

Economists expected the economy would generate 215,000 jobs in September. Over the last three months, job gains have averaged 224,000.

Professional and business services led the job gains with 81,000.

Construction added 16,000 jobs and manufacturing 4,000.
