Pioneer of Carpet Industry Dies
Fort Oglethorpe, GA, November 28, 2006--Carl D. Hagaman, age 91 of Chattanooga, died November 14, 2006. Mr. Hagaman was a well-known and successful businessman. Carl Hagaman was one of the “pioneers” of the carpet business dating back to our industry’s infancy. His first carpet venture was “Heritage Carpet Mills,” a business that was ultimately acquired in the mid ‘60’s by Bud Seratean of Coronet Industries. Shortly thereafter, he founded Danube Carpets. Carl’s retirement from the carpet industry was when he sold Danube in 1982. After several transitions, that mill is now a division of Shaw Industries. During his carpet career, Carl Hagaman was never afraid to purchase and pioneer cutting-edge technology that was being introduced to the growing carpet industry. For example, because of his early investment in new machinery, his companies were responsible for refining and developing the earliest 5/64th gauge tufting machines, and initial cut and loop technology. Mr. Hagaman also became a founding investor in “Color Strand”, an early space dyeing facility in Dalton, as well as, “Color Masters”, a pioneer of the then state-of-the-art “Artos” dyeing technology. Founder of Community Federal Bank, presently Am-South Bank, as well as, various other small businesses. He was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church. Preceded in death by son, Carl Dean Hagaman Jr. Surviving relatives, wife of 66 years, Josephine Biggs Hagaman. Sons, Donald Biggs Hagaman and Daniel Paul Hagaman both of Chattanooga. Carl had the help of his 2 sons Don and Dan at Danube carpets until its sale. Today, Dan Hagaman remains in the carpet business (also with his 2 sons!) at Hagaman Carpet Industries.
