New Biotech Plant Coming to Tennessee

Loudon, TN, Sept. 1--With gas prices hitting $3.00 per gallon for regular, people are searching for ways to conserve. A new business coming to Loudon promises to help in that effort. Its creators say it will generate 50 new jobs while helping the environment and reducing our dependence on foreign oil all by making a product called Bio-PDO. Bio-PDO will be used to make other products such as clothes and carpet. "It's got a very nice feel when you make it into fabric, it's got stain resistance, super for carpet, it's very springy, good for carpet, good for clothing," said Tate & Lyle CEO Iain Ferguson. Tate & Lyle and DuPont are teaming up to build a $100 million plant in Loudon. It will take corn and make it into Bio-PDO. "It's a renewable resource taking the place of something which is traditionally been made from petrol chemicals which of course is not renewable. So it's a real advantage to the environment," said Ferguson. The new plant is set to open next year.
