Mohawk Pioneer Shuttleworth Dies in New York

Amsterdam, NY, Sept. 21, 2010--Herbert L. Shuttleworth, the third and last member of his family to run Mohasco, the forerunner to Mohawk Industries, died September 11.

William Shuttleworth and his four sons, who came to America from England in 1875, started a carpet mill in the Hudson Valley. After their father died, the four brothers came to Amsterdam in 1878, taking over an empty factory along the Mohawk River in the East End.

Herbert L. Shuttleworth II, who had spent some time running Amsterdam’s New York Yankees farm team, the Rugmakers, became Mohawk vice president in 1948 and Mohawk Mills president in 1952.
