Houzz Releases 2026 U.S. Home Design Trend Predictions for Flooring
Palo Alto, CA, November 18, 2025-Houzz has released its 2026 U.S. Home Design Trend Predictions, based on Houzz search insights from 70M+ homeowners and activity from 3M+ residential construction and design pros.
Flooring-specific findings that may be useful for Floor Focus’ coverage of surface trends and material demand.
• Checkerboard floors making a strong comeback
Searches on Houzz for “checkerboard floor” are up 38%, and “bathroom checkerboard” has more than doubled (103%). While the classic black-and-white pattern remains popular, designers are increasingly specifying sage-and-cream, emerald, oxblood and burgundy combinations for a richer, more elevated look. High-quality materials such as honed marble and handmade terra cotta are giving the pattern a more artisanal, long-lasting feel.
• Natural stone slabs with subtle, organic veining
In kitchens and bathrooms, homeowners are gravitating toward stone with soft movement in greens, browns, reds and golds. While many use these for countertops and backsplashes, designers are also incorporating them into flooring applications where durability and a luxe, organic look are key.
• Warm, earthy palettes shaping flooring selections
Across the home, designers on Houzz are pairing floors with olive greens, taupes, deep browns, burgundies and warm yellows. This is influencing choices in wood stains, tile tones and textured finishes that lean more grounded and timeless.
• Visualization tools becoming part of the pre-construction norm
With 22% of homeowners saying they struggled to picture the end result, builders and remodelers are increasingly using 3D floor plans and AR walkthroughs to support decision-making and reduce change orders.
