G-P Sells Three Lumber Mills to Allegheny Wood

Atlanta, GA, September 8--Georgia-Pacific has sold three lumber mills to closely held Allegheny Wood Products Inc. for an undisclosed amount as it shifts its focus from hardwood lumber. Georgia-Pacific Tuesday said it immediately passed operating control of the facilities in Enfield, N.C.; Green Valley, W. Va.; and Marble, Pa., to Allegheny. The three plants, which produce red oak, ash, maple, poplar and other lumber for use in cabinet making, furniture and flooring, employ a total of about 250 people. Petersburg, W. Va.-based Allegheny started operations in the mills Tuesday and said there would be no layoffs due to the deal. Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific said the move came as part of its focus on wood and gypsum panels, softwood lumber and chemical products, and on differentiated building products. The Enfield mill has a capacity to put out 20 million board feet a year; Green Valley has 30 million board feet capacity and the Marble mill produces 18 million board feet.
