Federated to Close 5 Distribution Centers

Cincinnati, OH, January 20, 2006--Federated Department Stores Inc., said Thursday it will close five distribution centers, affecting up to 750 jobs, as it strives to cut costs and realign its Macy's division following the acquisition of May Department Stores Co., last year. The department store operator, aiming to reduce duplicate locations, said it will close distribution centers in Manchester, Conn., and Baltimore in June. It also plans to close centers in Aurora, Colo., Portland, Ore., and Salt Lake City in August. Federated said it will try to find opportunities for affected workers at other facilities, and offer severance to workers who are laid off. The retailer said it has already included the expenses for closing the centers in an earlier estimate of $1 billion in one-time costs, spread over three years starting last year.
