European Firms Develop Sustainable Carpet Technology

Venlo, The Netherlands, June 26, 2014 -- Royal DSM, the global life sciences and material sciences company and Niaga, a Netherlands-based provider of sustainable products for the carpet industry, said they have formed a partnership to develop and commercialize sustainable technology for recyclable carpet.

Based on proprietary and complementary technologies, DSM-Niaga will enable the industry to close the carpet materials loop, the companies said.

Current carpet systems are based on a heterogeneous mix of materials that, at the end of the carpet’s usage or lifetime, often end up in landfills or incinerators.
Niaga’s carpet fiber binding technology, combined with DSM’s engineered polyester lamination adhesives, enable the carpet industry to manufacture polyester carpet systems or duo polyester-polyamide systems that are fully recyclable, thus making carpet waste obsolete.

"In DSM we found a strong, and reliable partner to speed up the development - currently commercial scale - and market this technology globally," said Norbert van der Nap, co-founder of Niaga.

"The DSM-Niaga technology is latex free and provides a carpet manufacturing company with the possibility of creating and re-creating raw materials from waste.”
