Washington, DC, May 6, 2022-Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 428,000 in April, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.6%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Job growth was widespread, led by gains in leisure and hospitality, in manufacturing, and in transportation and warehousing.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this marks “the 12th straight month of job gains above 400,000 but mark an easing from a February gain of 750,000 jobs, generated as infections faded from the Omicron variant of Covid-19. In 2019, the year before the pandemic, employers created an average of 164,000 jobs each month.”
