Container Rates from China Halved Following Tariff Implementation
Charlotte, NC, March 17, 2025-Container rates from China to U.S. have been cut in half following the implementation of tariffs, reports Truist.
“Shipping prices have been declining notably over the last several weeks. According to Drewry (private), spot rates for ocean containers from Shanghai to Los Angeles fell 7% this week alone and have roughly been cut in half over the past five weeks. This is obviously aligned with the Trump administration's tariffs on Chinese goods, as the demand for imported goods in the U.S. has seemingly fallen. Per the article, we note that some shippers are scheduling blank shipments to reduce overall capacity and drive up container prices, but it is unclear how much impact this will have at the current time.”
