Australian Tile Company Closing its Doors

Melbourne, Australia, October 20--Ceramic tile maker Johnson Tiles is closing most of its manufacturing operations in Australia, resulting in the loss of 60 jobs from its Bayswater factory in Melbourne's outer east. The company says it has been forced to end manufacturing due to increased global competition and economic pressures. Former union leader Craig Johnston is currently serving a nine-month jail sentence over an incident at Johnson Tiles three years ago. Johnston led a workplace protest at the factory that turned violent. He was originally given a suspended sentence but a Crown appeal led to Johnson being sent to prison.
