ASCR Presents Phoenix Award to Rolyn Construction

Columbia, MD, March 31, 2006--The Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration (ASCR) has presented its highest honor for innovation in restoration to Rolyn Construction Corp., of Rockville, Md. “The Phoenix Award for Innovation in Restoration is presented each year to recognize one project from a host of outstanding candidates,” said Gary Dooner, CR, ASCR’s vice president of education. “It exemplifies the complement of skills required to restore a project to pre-loss condition.” This year’s project involved just one of the many buildings damaged in a devastating and lengthy hurricane season. When Hurricane Wilma roared across Florida with 125-mph winds, one of the buildings damaged was a 27-story office building with more than 1,000 panes of vision and spandrel glass blown out. The building’s structural steel and concrete deck made the spandrel openings inaccessible from the inside, requiring a large number of swing stages to be brought on site. Specialized equipment was brought in from as far away as Cincinnati, Ohio, to correctly rig two surfaces of the building so that the broken window openings could be boarded up and waterproofed. Interior cleaning involved gross debris removal of drywall, ceiling tile and grid, broken glass and other building materials. Rolyn’s rapid response to this disaster enabled them to reduce the cost of the loss for all parties in a safe and efficient manner, and saved the insurance company from a secondary loss due to rain or future storms.
