American-Biltrite Wins ADEX Gold

Toronto, Ontario, June 28, 2006--American Biltrite won a Gold in the 2006-2007 Award for Design Excellence (ADEX) for the development of its new flooring product, Dura-Med. ADEX is one of the industry's most prestigious design awards. This year, more than two thousand submissions were entered, making 2006 the most competitive judging year to date. One of the challenges healthcare facility designers face is how to build an efficient space that adheres to all infection-control regulations while also providing a beautiful relaxed healing environment for patients and their families. American Biltrite developed information chains with healthcare personnel, patient services, and designers to discover their flooring needs; their responses led to the development of Dura-Med.  Dura-Med is an adaptable product, which supports the needs of both the patient and the healthcare professional. To create a comfortable environment, Dura-Med’s rubber component was crafted to absorb noise and remove unwanted distractions. The pattern and organic colour pallet also aids in creating the environment as it imitates carpet and provides a familiar setting that stimulates relaxation.  Dura-Med’s solid surface was designed to support the patient’s entire recovery process by allowing them to safely move their feet across the floor while also providing grip for stability. In addition, the product’s inherent rubber characteristics and unique balance of material both help prevent slips and permit the product to “give with impact,” cushioning unpreventable falls. Other features include Dura-Med’s ability to suppress the development of smoke and flames, repel dirt and stains, and it’s impermeable barrier to contaminants and bacteria.  The product also includes a high resistance to abrasions and a high tolerance against chemicals, disinfectants, oil, grease, and staining (proven by ASTM F 925).
