Allen Stein, Former CEO of Sutton, Has Died
Atlanta, GA, January 7, 2025-Allen Stein, 90, former Shaw executive, died December 31, 2024.
Stein became executive vice president of the May Company in 1968.
He then moved into the manufacturing side of carpet in 1971, when he joined a business started by his brother Howard. The company, Howard Carpet Mills, sold private-label broadloom to distributors.
In 1987, Howard created the Sutton division to sell directly to the retail trade. Alan served as CEO of Sutton Carpet Mills. Sutton was acquired by Salem in 1989, and Shaw acquired in Salem-Sutton in 1992.
Through Shaw, the Sutton team developed a leadership position in residential polypropylene, a fiber once considered a commodity, and helped to establish it as one of the fastest-growing yarn types.
After the acquisition by Shaw, Allen served as executive vice president of Shaw Industries’ Sutton division.
