Masland Adds Second Tile Machine in Alabama Plant

Atmore, AL, Aug. 15, 2008--The strong commercial market for carpet tiles has led Masland Carpets and Rugs, a division of The Dixie Group, to add a second machine to its Atmore plant.

Ken Dempsey, the president of Masland's commercial carpet division, said the company added the second machine, worth nearly $3 million, earlier this year.

Masland has about 370 employees in Atmore and 200 in Saraland, plus more than 100 field salespeople who report to the Saraland office.

Dempsey said the carpet tile business supports about 25 jobs apiece in Atmore and Saraland, with tufting machines in Atmore and backing installation in Saraland, which also handles distribution.

Parent Dixie Group, based in Chattanooga, Tenn., has seen its business struggle, along with other major carpet makers, during the nosedive in new house construction. But sales to non-residential projects have generally held up better.
