Says Truist, “MHK came in well above Street and guidance but views for 4Q26 are below, most likely on diesel, energy, and most importantly raw material inflation. The release indicates this negative price/mix will continue into 1Q27. Revenues in the quarter were mostly flat with a weak flooring market in our view. Finally, management engaged in substantial share repurchases and in just a few months has bought back 4% of shares outstanding. With leverage still very low, we suspect substantially more repurchases will be coming at current valuations.
“Share Repurchase Begins in Earnest. One of the biggest changes expected with the rotation to a new CEO is a ramp up of share repurchases. The quarter did not disappoint with the company purchasing 2 million shares (3% of shares outstanding) for $261 million and an additional $34 million QTD resulting in a 4% reduction in share count. These repurchases over just a few months represent a higher level seen in any yearly period except 2021. A new repurchase program of $500 million was approved, and we suspect it will not be the last.
“Flooring North America (34% of Sales) Sees Flattish Sales and Margin Improvement. Net sales increased 1% y/y or were flat adjusted for shipping days. We view these results as above an overall weak flooring market in the period, although volume was down 3%. Adjusted EBIT margin increased 90 bps to 8.1% as tariff benefits and productivity gains were partially offset by higher input costs.”
