Florence, AL, October 19, 2026—Dal-Tile announced on October 16 that it will close its Florence, Alabama plant, citing the slow-down in the housing market resulting in weaker tile demand.
According to employees who spoke to Shoals Insider, Daltile vice president Claudio Caselli told workers the decision was made to “optimize” operations due to the housing market being at a low point.
Stylon Corporation opened the Florence plant in 1954. Mohawk acquired it through its purchase of Marazzi in 2013. After Stylon went bankrupt, Monarch Tile assumed operation of the facility.
In August 1998, Marazzi acquired the Florence operation from Monarch. It operated as Monarch Ceramic Tile within American Marazzi Tile, part of Italy’s Marazzi Group. Between 2003 and 2005, the plant was expanded substantially. A $5.3 million expansion was followed by a $17 million investment, including a new 160,000-square-foot building and a second porcelain production line intended to nearly double capacity. The plant was producing glazed porcelain floor tile.
In April 2013, Mohawk acquired Marazzi, including the Monarch plant.
The company’s notice lists February 26, 2027 as the permanent closure date—ending 72 years of tile manufacturing at the site.
Florence was a union operation, and Mohawk’s Dickson, Tennessee plant is non-union. In addition, in 2016, Dickson began production with modern digital imaging, rectifying, polishing and an efficient roller-hearth kiln, capabilities that could give it a cost advantage.
