Innovation Underfoot: Flooring innovation redefines performance – June 2026

For years, flooring innovation often followed a familiar formula: new visuals, larger formats, tougher wearlayers and incremental performance improvements. Those developments continue, but manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond traditional product upgrades to solve different challenges. Across categories, this year’s introductions reflect a broader shift in priorities—toward wellness, sustainability, installation efficiency and materials designed around how people actually live and work.

The latest wave of product development is targeting everything from allergen reduction and pet-friendly performance to lower-carbon materials and easier installation methods. Others are rethinking how flooring feels underfoot, incorporating tactile finishes and sensory design into categories where visuals historically dominated the conversation. At the same time, manufacturers continue to explore recycled inputs, alternative materials and circular product models as environmental considerations gain influence.

Taken together, the launches highlighted in this roundup suggest that innovation increasingly is being measured not only by how a floor looks, but also by how it performs throughout its lifecycle, and how effectively it responds to changing consumer expectations. 

Mohawk

Health and indoor environmental quality are emerging as new areas of focus in flooring development, prompting manufacturers to introduce products designed around occupant wellbeing. Mohawk introduced Pur-Ease technology in 2026 as part of its SmartStrand carpet portfolio, adding a wellness-focused feature aimed at addressing allergen concerns.

Integrated into select SmartStrand products, Pur-Ease uses built-in probiotic technology intended to reduce common household allergens, including dust mite allergens, pet dander and pollen. According to Mohawk, the naturally derived probiotics continue working over time and remain effective even after repeated cleanings. The company said testing has shown reductions in targeted allergens of up to 75%.

Pur-Ease also received third-party validation through the Asthma & Allergy Friendly Certification Program. Mohawk said SmartStrand products featuring the technology are the first treated carpet products to earn certification under the program’s enhanced textile flooring standard.

Rather than centering solely on durability and stain resistance, Pur-Ease positions wellness as another layer of flooring performance.

I4F

Artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape product development, and I4F is applying the technology across product engineering, sales and customer support alongside its growing portfolio of patented technologies.

Known primarily for locking systems, the company has expanded through acquisitions and technology development spanning installation systems, digital printing, surface technologies and material innovations.

At Surfaces 2026, I4F highlighted “AI4F,” an initiative designed to analyze years of performance and testing data. According to CEO John Rietveldt, the company is using AI to study relationships among locking systems, product construction and performance outcomes with the goal of predicting optimal product geometries and performance characteristics.

Rather than relying solely on traditional trial-and-error development, I4F is using predictive modeling to help guide future product design and shorten development timelines.

Unilin

Installation systems and coordinated accessories are taking on a larger role in flooring development, an area where Unilin has expanded its technology portfolio beyond locking systems alone.

Among the company’s newer developments is a system that converts flooring panels into matching accessories, allowing manufacturers to create stair treads, transitions and skirtings from the same flooring material. Unilin also introduced integrated solutions for square and rectangular tile formats intended to improve alignment and simplify installation.

The additions point toward a more connected flooring system, where installation technologies and coordinated components become part of the overall product strategy.

Välinge

Herringbone visuals remain one of the fastest-growing looks across hard-surface categories, but installation complexity has long limited broader adoption.

Välinge introduced 5G H/B One in 2026, a one-panel herringbone installation technology designed to eliminate the need for separate A and B panels. Built on the company’s 5G Fold Down platform, the system aims to simplify installation logistics while improving vertical locking performance.

The technology reframes installation itself as an area for innovation, targeting greater efficiency for both manufacturers and installers.

Shaw

Pet ownership has become a larger influence on flooring design, pushing manufacturers to develop products built around scratch resistance, durability and whole-home performance.

Shaw expanded its pet-focused Pet Perfect platform in 2026, extending the brand beyond carpet and into resilient flooring and laminate categories. As part of that expansion, Shaw introduced PawDefense technology in select luxury vinyl products. 

Integrated into select luxury vinyl products, PawDefense is a proprietary coating technology designed to protect floors from scratches caused by pet claws, foot traffic and everyday wear. According to Shaw, the technology delivers 50% greater scratch resistance than traditional luxury vinyl flooring. 

The launch highlights how lifestyle considerations increasingly shape product development alongside traditional performance metrics.

AHF

Installation flexibility took center stage in AHF Products’ 2026 hardwood updates, which focused on simplifying installation and expanding application options. Among the additions was Bruce Natural Choice 5/16” solid hardwood paired with the company’s Summit Select adhesive system, creating a gluedown installation option for solid hardwood over concrete subfloors.

According to AHF, the waterproof adhesive creates a permanent bond while eliminating the need for moisture and pH testing, helping reduce preparation requirements. The lower-profile construction also supports remodel projects by minimizing transitions.

Cali

Looselay flooring historically has been associated with installation convenience. Newer product introductions, however, are emphasizing construction and performance upgrades.

Cali introduced Hang Loose in 2026 as its first looselay LVT collection developed specifically for new construction, multifamily and commercial applications.

The product features a 5mm construction with a 22 mil wearlayer and a fiberglass core intended to improve dimensional stability. The collection also incorporates embossed-in-register technology and multiple plank patterns to increase realism and reduce repetition.

The launch signals changing expectations for looselay products as manufacturers push the category into more demanding applications.

Crossville

Texture and tactile experience are becoming a larger part of tile innovation. Crossville, part of AHF Products, incorporated its FeatherSoft technology into Cleve, a carbon-neutral porcelain tile collection inspired by quartzite visuals. 

Originally introduced in 2024, FeatherSoft is created through a proprietary manufacturing process rather than a surface coating. The technology produces a smooth, matte surface designed to feel soft and almost silky when dry while becoming noticeably more grabby when exposed to water, balancing comfort with slip resistance. 

The approach reflects broader product development trends moving beyond visuals alone and placing greater emphasis on how surfaces engage users through touch, performance and sensory experience.

Taylor

Installation efficiency remains a growing focus across flooring as labor availability and jobsite productivity continue influencing product development priorities. At the center of Taylor Adhesives’ recent efforts is Dynamic, a multi-use adhesive system designed to support multiple flooring applications.

According to Taylor, Dynamic functions as a firm-set transitional pressure-sensitive adhesive that allows contractors to use one system across several flooring categories rather than switching products between applications.

Momentum around installation technology also gained attention when Meridian Adhesives sold Taylor to Avery Dennison in 2025, underscoring broader interest in adhesive platforms and workflow technologies.

Dynamic shifts the adhesive conversation beyond bond strength and toward jobsite efficiency.

CFL

CFL expanded its innovation efforts in 2026 beyond patent activity through an extended technology partnership with I4F that added two new technologies to I4F’s licensing portfolio: Optibevel and Melamine-SPC (m-SPC). Optibevel uses a high-precision in-line laser process to create decorative bevels designed to improve manufacturing flexibility and visual
consistency across a range of flooring formats. The partnership also introduced m-SPC, a new material category developed to combine waterproof SPC performance with laminate-grade surface durability. 

The additions build on CFL’s recent focus on proprietary technologies, including earlier patents tied to beveling and waterproof laminate construction, illustrating how manufacturers increasingly are pursuing innovation not only through new products but also through manufacturing processes and material development.

Portobello

Advanced manufacturing technology is becoming a larger part of the innovation story as domestic producers invest in automation and production flexibility. Portobello America’s Baxter, Tennessee facility integrates advanced manufacturing systems from System Ceramics intended to improve precision and production flexibility.

The facility’s approach also earned international recognition when Portobello America received the TECNA 2024 award in Italy for “Best New Tile Factory in North America.”

The Baxter operation illustrates how manufacturing technology itself has become a competitive differentiator.

Lico

Circular design principles are beginning to influence how flooring products are developed, manufactured and eventually reintroduced into the market.

Lico’s True Earth Floorworks platform uses reclaimed and recycled natural materials including wood fibers, cork, natural rubber and leather while avoiding plastics, VOCs, PVC and formaldehyde.

The company also incorporated lifecycle planning
through its “Second Life” program, which allows returned flooring products to be refinished and reintroduced into the market.

The emphasis extends sustainability beyond material selection and into longer-term product lifecycle considerations.

Wagner

Moisture monitoring is moving beyond handheld readings and into connected systems designed for long-term performance tracking.

Wagner Meters’ Floor Sentry embedded data logger installs beneath hardwood flooring and continuously monitors temperature and relative humidity conditions.

Connected through the Wagner Sentry app, the technology records thousands of readings and can alert users when conditions move outside preset ranges.

The shift reflects growing interest in proactive monitoring systems intended to reduce moisture-related failures and long-term callbacks.
