Tarkett to Close Brookneal Virginia Plant

Brookneal, VA, June 27, 2006--Brookneal’s second largest employer, Tarkett Wood Inc., is shutting its doors at the end of August, leaving 50 people without work, according to the the Lynchburg News Advance. Tarkett Wood, a division of Tarkett Inc., will close its Brookneal plant August 25 because of the declining demand for the products produced in Brookneal, said company spokesman Harald Schueren. The hardwood flooring manufacturer’s announcement comes on the heels of an announcement by Dan River--the town’s largest employer--that it also plans to leave the small Campbell County town. Tarkett Wood Inc., purchased the former Burruss Co., facility in 2001. According to a letter from Tarkett to Campbell County officials, manufacturing operations will cease by the end of July. Schueren said the company plans to sell the Brookneal plant and send the remaining work to the company’s plant in Stuart.
