Creston Carpet Mills Closes Its Doors

Dalton, GA, Sept. 8, 2010--Creston Carpet Mills of Dalton, Georgia ceased operations on September 3, mostly due to economic reasons.

Owned by George Hearne and Stuart Goodfriend, the company opened its doors in June 1997. At its high point in 2002, Creston employed 122 workers and grossed just over $27 million. 

Creston produced loop pile carpet, which it sold through wholesale distributors and big box stores including Home Depot and Menards. The company did a significant portion of its business in Canada.

Several factors led to the closing. The lessening of popularity in loop pile products affected the company adversely.

In addition, Creston, which did not extrude its own yarn, was feeling a significant margin squeeze due to raw material price increases. The company also commissioned an industry forecast that showed pessimistic numbers for the coming year.

Goodfriend is also battling cancer.

The company has sold all its equipment and assets and will vacate its facility around the middle of September.
