USGBC Begins Construction on Legacy Project

Washington, DC, June 8, 2015 -- The U.S. Green Building Council and the Capital Area Food Bank broke ground last week on the 2015 Greenbuild Legacy project, a new urban food studio designed to help underserved members of the Washington D.C. area.

The CAFB project was chosen by the Greenbuild Host Committee, led by the USGBC National Capitol Region, as a finalist for this year’s Legacy Project, an annual permanent gift of education, service and thanks to the city that hosts Greenbuild.

The project proposal was co-submitted by CAFB and the project team, HKS Architects, Inc. and Clark Construction Group. There were 12 initial project submittals, and this urban food project won a popular vote at USGBC National Capitol Region Chapter’s annual Green Tie Affair, a 500-person kick-off event on the road to Greenbuild that took place in February.

“Hosting Greenbuild in Washington, D.C. is bringing the green building movement home for us,” said Chris Ashworth, board chair, USGBC-NCR.

The new food studio, which is set for completion this fall, will be part of CAFB’s educational demonstration garden and will provide an all-season space for growing food, cooking classes, workshops and other events.

CAFB serves more than 500,000 people struggling with hunger in the DC metro region.
