Project Notebook: Nokia Theatre - April 2008

AEG, owner of sports and entertainment facilities as well as sports franchises all across the world, is transforming a four million square foot piece of downtown Los Angeles into a massive sports, entertainment and residential district.

The $2.5 billion project is being built right alongside the Staples Center and Los Angeles Convention Center, and it includes hotels, luxury condos, restaurants, retail space, live music and performance theaters, a 14 screen Cineplex, ESPN broadcast facilities and office space.

One of the centerpieces of the project is the Nokia Theatre, which opened last October with performances from the Eagles and the Dixie Chicks. The 7,100 seat theater will host the American Idol finale this May and is the new home of the Primetime Emmy’s. Bentley Prince Street was chosen to carpet the theater.

It was a two year process of working with AEG and developing the carpet before Bentley Prince Street’s 15,000 square yards of custom carpet was produced and installed. The carpet, featuring BPS’ branded nylon 6,6, was produced with cutting edge green processes, including many rounds of Tricycle simulations before making physical samples. All of the BPS carpet is certified as Sustainable Choice Gold products by Scientific Certification Systems.

L.A. Live also includes a 54 story hotel and residence tower, designed by A&D giant Gensler. The tower features luxury condos—the Ritz-Carlton Residences—from the 27th floor up, and the floors below are shared by the five star Ritz Carlton and the four star JW Marriott hotels.
