Mannington Wood Eyeing Expansion

Livingston, AL, July 16—The Sumter County Record Journal has reported that Mannington Wood Flooring in nearby Epes could expand and add 115 new jobs. The newspaper cited an announcement by University of West Alabama spokesperson James Mock. Mock, who heads the Regional Center for Community & Economic Development at the University of West Alabama, appeared before the commission to ask them to consider the granting of tax abatements for the possible expansion of Mannington. Mock pointed out to the board that the decision to expand in Epes was not final and that they are in competition with a site in North Carolina. “We want to take action to get them here,” Mock encouraged the board. Mock explained to the commission that two phases will add about 20 jobs at first and then another 85 jobs respectively if the expansion is approved by Mannington officials. A press release issued Tuesday, July 13 stated in part: “The Mannington Board of Directors is considering expansion at either its High Point, North Carolina or Epes, Alabama facilities. "If it occurs," Mock stated," it would potentially be an expansion involving two phases. "Phase One, which may occur in Epes, would involve the purchase of additional equipment and the possible creation of twenty to thirty jobs by Mannington. If Phase one is approved,” he added, “a Phase Two could also occur in the future, which would double the employment at Epes, assuming that the expansion occurs and Epes is selected as the site.” The purpose of Mock’s appearance before the Sumter County Commission was to begin the process for obtaining tax abatements for Mannington in the event of an expansion. Alabama law requires that area authorities adopt a resolution, granting tax abatements to an expanding industry. The resolution must also be forwarded to the State of Alabama. In order for the abatements to become effective, these processes must be completed prior to the purchase of any equipment by the industry. “We are trying to stay ahead of the ball,” Mock pointed out. “By getting these technicalities out of the way now, we’ll be ready so that Mannington can begin making purchases in the event it chooses to expand at Epes. In addition, we’re hoping that our proactive approach will positively influence them and show them that we want them to expand in our region.” Sumter County Commission Chairman Isaac Bonner said the county is willing to consider doing whatever it can to encourage the expansion project. “We usually do that,” stated Commissioner Ronnie Beard regarding granting the tax exemptions. Sumter County Attorney Drayton Pruitt said if the Sumter County Industrial Board gets involved with the expansion project the county could offer the requested exemptions as well as a sales tax exemption if approved. Epes Mayor Larry Yates was not available for comment by press time Wednesday but Livingston Mayor Tom Tartt issued a statement. “Mannington is one of the counties largest employers and they have been steady for a good number of years. “We are delighted that things are going well for them and that they are considering expanding in our area. “The City of Livingston will do whatever we can do to accommodate the expansion of Mannington Wood Flooring and we are hope them continued success,” Mayor Tartt stated. The Commissioners unanimously approved the motion to offer tax abatements to Mannington for their expansion and authorized Mock to draft a resolution on the Commission’s behalf. Mock has also requested the Epes’ City Council to adopt a similar resolution.
