Durable Goods Orders Rose 4.5% in August

Washington, DC, September 27, 2018-New orders for manufactured durable goods in August increased $11.1 billion or 4.5% to $259.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. 

This increase, up two of the last three months, followed a 1.2% July decrease. 

Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.1%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 2.6%. Transportation equipment, also up two of the last three months, led the increase, $10.9 billion or 13.0% to $95.3 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in August, up three of the last four months, increased $1.9 billion or 0.8% to $253.1 billion. This followed a 0.1% July decrease. Transportation equipment, up two of the last three months, led the increase, $1.6 billion or 1.9% to $86.0 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in August, up nine of the last ten months, increased $10.4 billion or 0.9% to $1,176.5 billion. This followed a 0.1% July increase. Transportation equipment, up six of the last seven months, led the increase, $9.3 billion or 1.2% to $811.0 billion.
